As we learn to engineer the living world, how do we engineer a world in which we want to live?

Our abilities to edit, evolve and even create new forms of life are rapidly maturing. These capabilities offer powerful new ways to feed, fuel, and heal our world, but they also open up complex challenges. We need to ensure that biological innovations engender more just, peaceful, and prosperous societies. This will require more than learning to engineer biology at the scale of molecules and organisms; we need strategies to engineer biology at social, organizational and global scales.

The Bio.Polis Initiative was an experiment in situating a multi-unit center for biotechnology policy and leadership at Stanford University - a world-class reasearch institution in the heart of the biotech basin. While we are no longer running research or programs, this website serves as a record of our vision and prior activities.
