Ph.D. Candidate in Bioengineering

Alex Ferris

Alex Ferris is a PhD candidate in bioengineering at Stanford University. Their thesis research with Prof. Virginia Walbot focuses on using scRNA-seq to understand how common smut infection in maize anthers is dependent on cell type. They also work with the Gilligan lab at the University of Cambridge developing stochastic, spatio-temporal epidemic models for the spread of cassava brown streak disease in sub-Saharan Africa to provide recommendations for improving disease management strategies and disease surveillance within a country. Alex is originally from Raleigh, NC and holds a BA in bioengineering. They are supported by a fellowship from the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation. Outside of bioengineering, Alex enjoys playing banjo and doing tech for community theater.
