Ph.D. Student

William Oestreich

Ph.D. Student in Biology, admitted Autumn 2017

Will Oestreich is a Ph.D. candidate in Biology at Stanford University, where he is co-advised by Dr. Larry Crowder and Dr. Jeremy Goldbogen. He is supported by a Graduate Research Fellowship award from the National Science Foundation and a Stanford Graduate Fellowship from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. In his research, Will explores the behavior and conservation of migratory species. This work includes understanding the environmental and oceanographic drivers of migration, social and collective behavior in migration, tools for observing migration in remote ecosystems, and the dynamic and equitable resource management of ecosystems for both migratory species and human uses. Will often uses bioacoustic and biologging techniques to study wild populations, including the focal species of his Ph.D. thesis work (blue whales) and his favorite backyard critters (bats). He received both his BS and MS degrees in environmental engineering from Northwestern University and formerly worked at both the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Natural Resources Defense Council. Outside of work, Will can usually be found in search of waves, wildlife, or friends to play music with.
